About Heart House
Heart House Hospice, formerly the Hospice of Peel, is a not-for-profit, volunteer-based
organization that has been providing Hospice comfort and support to the Mississauga
and Brampton communities for over 24 years. The organization is managed by 13 permanent
staff and lead by a 15 member Board.
Our Hospice, began assisting people with terminal-illness, in their homes, in 1985
thanks to Ms. Laurie Bennett, a palliative care professional.
Today we serve over 1000 clients annually and thousands of families and loved ones
throughout Mississauga and Brampton. Our services are used by people of all ages
and over 13 ethnic cultures. Since the beginning we have cared for over 8,300 terminally-ill
clients. And the need continues to grow.
In the past year there was a 55% increase in referrals, and an increase of 30% in
the number of clients served.
By 2018, it is expected there will be an astounding 67% increase in seniors aged
65 and over in our community. As one of the largest community based hospices in
Ontario, we are committed to providing services to a population of over one million
people in Mississauga and Brampton.
It is estimated that only 15% of Ontarians have access to skilled hospice palliative
care services. 95% of Canadians say they want to die at home but 75% die in a hospital
or other institution. We want to change that.
It is only from generous support of our volunteers, personal and corporate donors
and the involvement our community that we will meet our obligations and fulfill
our vision.
